Mount Sinai’s plans to shut down Beth Israel Hospital have stalled again. A New York appellate judge on Friday issued a new temporary stay blocking the move, just days after a state Supreme Court judge dismissed a lawsuit challenging the Manhattan hospital's long-delayed closure.

Since St. Vincent’s hospital in the West Village closed in 2010, there has been no emergency department that can accept traumas from the Brooklyn Bridge to 17th St. – one of the most densely populated places in the country.

Mount Sinai Beth Israel finally has a closing date set following a long-drawn-out legal battle. Beth Israel, founded in 1889, is located at First Avenue and E 16th St., with no major hospitals below E 16th St.

Judge Jeffrey Pearlman dismissed a lawsuit filed in August by a community coalition challenging the closing. Following the judge’s decision, Mount Sinai spokesperson Loren Riegelhaupt said the health system would “immediately” begin implementing the closure plan, which was first announced in fall 2023 and was initially planned for July 2024.

After years of legal battles, Mount Sinai Beth Israel will officially close on March 26 at 11:59 p.m., leaving Lower Manhattan without a full-service community hospital. FOX 5 NY’s Teresa Priolo has the latest on this healthcare shake-up.
