SpaceX has announced that it's lowering the orbits of some 4,400 Starlink satellites following a near miss with a new Chinese satellite last year. SpaceX says the shift, which will take place throughout 2026, will improve space safety for all satellite operators and reduce the time it takes for any failed Starlink satellites to deorbit.

Scientists fear SpaceX’s 9,000+ satellites could crash Earth’s low orbit
Low Earth orbit is no longer a quiet frontier. With thousands of commercial spacecraft circling just a few hundred kilometers above our heads, scientists now warn that a runaway chain of collisions could turn this region into a lethal shooting gallery and send fragments spiraling back toward the planet.
Stargaze is basically a space traffic control platform, and comes about a month after a satellite deployed from a Chinese rocket came within 200 feet of a Starlink craft.
SpaceX’s Starlink has developed a unique Space Situational Awareness (SSA) system dubbed Stargaze. Elon Musk, in his tweet, remarked, “This will greatly reduce the probability of collisions that create orbital debris (space junk) hazard s.”
Starlink's new FCC approval for 7,500 more satellites aims to boost service and capacity for millions. But at what cost?
SpaceX says iPhone satellite provider Globalstar should delay its launch plans until the FCC decides whether to revamp its 1.6GHz and 2.4GHz spectrum rules.
