There is good news in the fight against drug overdose, as there is currently a sharp reduction in deaths, with numbers now at the lowest

CNN’s Kaitlan Collins caught up with DJ Daniel, the 13-year-old cancer survivor honored by President Donald Trump during his address to Congress. Opioid and other drug overdose deaths in Illinois have dropped for the first time since 2018.

According to the latest figures, deaths involving synthetic opioids, like fentanyl analogs, also decreased by 9.5% in 2023, deaths involving heroin dropped by 21.2%, and natural and semisynthetic opioids deaths decreased by 17.4%. There were 2,855 fatalities attributed to opioid overdoses, 305 fewer than in 2022, marking a decrease of 9.7%.

Overdose drug deaths in Illinois have declined by 8.3% according to new data released by the Illinois Department of Public Health.
