Thousands marched in New Zealand on Friday, protesting a controversial bill that seeks to reinterpret the Treaty of Waitangi. The bill, which passed its first reading, has sparked nationwide rallies and a hikoi (march) to the capital.

The bill objects to certain to "ethnic quotas in public institutions," arguing protections for Māori culture defy "the principle of equal rights."

Two Māori MPs were removed from the chamber for protesting a bill that ‘reinterprets’ rights for the country’s Indigenous people
