WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump keeps saying that Republicans’ mega tax and spending cut legislation will eliminate taxes on federal Social Security benefits. It does not. At best, Trump’s “no tax on Social Security” claim exaggerates the benefits to seniors if either the House or Senate-passed proposals is signed into law.

Speaker Mike Johnson can lose just three members' votes and still pass the bill in a party-line vote. But more than a dozen Republicans are currently "no's."

Trump’s budget plan heads to the House, where members of the lower chamber will vote whether to accept or reject changes made to the bill in the Senate.
