The City of Americus is a Georgia municipal corporation with a seven member City Council composed of the Mayor and six Council members. The Mayor is elected by voters at-large and serves a four year term.

Lee has served twice as president of the Sumter Historic Trust, and he was elected in November of 2021 to a four-year term as mayor of the City of Americus. A sixth-generation resident of Americus and Sumter County, Lee has been married for 34 years to his wife Karen, also a retired Sumter County educator.

In order to operate a business within the city limits of Americus, the operator must have a valid business license. This is obtained by preparing an annual occupational tax return and remitting the appropriate amount of business and occupational taxes.
