George Walker was the first Black American to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music. He was a Fulbright Scholar, organist, and concert pianist — the first Black classical instrumentalist to play with the Philadelphia Orchestra or to be signed by major management. His compositions transcend genre and are too rarely performed.
