Observation, Gordon Lyon, Chugach State Park, AK- Jan 27th, 2026 Snowfall totaled ~8” at the parking lot and 4–6” at higher elevations. Beneath the new snow, the surface consisted of either previously bare ground or old, faceted wind slab over a faceted base of the snowpack. The snowpack in the Chugach State Park continues to have a poor structure of a hard windslab on top of a weak, sugary, faceted base. We recommend sticking to low angle terrain and if you do step out into steeper terrain-stick to good travel habits by having good eyes on your ski partners the whole time and travel one at a time down a slope.
