One of the most chilling timeslips Tom Slemen mentioned in his books was the one experienced by a group of people in the Mount Pleasant and Brownlow Hill area who felt a quake one day and all of them saw St John's Tower fall down to the sound of crowds screaming. The top of the tower seemed to land somewhere in Williamson Square and produced a choking cloud of smoke and debris that covered the city centre. This was in the early 2000s. Let's hope this incident never comes to pass. | Haunted Liver

Tom Slemen writes: In my Wirral Globe column on Sunday - the strange stories of two timeslips relating to a possible portal in an alleyway next to the Dee Hotel which took a couple back to the days of the Roman occupation - plus a very strange tale of a tramp in 1963 who claimed he'd escaped from a nuclear holocaust in 2033... | Haunted Liverpool

Tom Slemen writes of a weird incident in Dovecot... A strange and terrifying incident took place at a house on Gordon Drive, Dovecot, in 2014. Brian and Sarah, a couple in their twenties, stayed over at the house, which belonged to a friend of Sarah named Angela. Angela had recently separated from her boyfriend and was frightened to be on her own at the house because there had been an attempted break-in a few days earlier. Brian had tried to reassure Angela that burglars very rarely made a secon

From Haunted Liverpool 6: Terror on the M62 by Tom Slemen The following mysterious incident was related to me in September 2001, by a well-known Liverpool comedian whom I cannot identify. He stipulated that he would only relate the full facts of the bizarre and scary tale if I would give him my word that I would never identify him. I shall therefore have to call the comedian 'Bob'. In the early 1990s, Bob drove up the M62 to Manchester, where he was due to perform a comedy routine as part of a c

Tom recalls: On Saturday, 14 October 2017, two 18-year-old girls, out on the town, walk down Wood Street on their way to Hanover Street. As they stroll, they encounter what they believe to be luminous, multi-coloured LED beads forming the façade of a club. However, as they continue walking, they find themselves further up Wood Street, still moving forward, and then they reach the “curtains of glowing coloured beads” once more. This time, they discover a vast room illuminated by multi-coloured li

The Sign of the Feather (from Tom Slemen's Haunted Liverpool 10) In 1979, a fifty-year-old bachelor named Barry was devastated at the loss of his mother, who was taken by cancer. Barry went to drown his sorrows in The Villiers pub, which once stood at the junction of Elliott and Market Streets, in what is now the Clayton Square shopping centre. Barry's friends at the pub told him he'd get over the loss with time, and consoled him with drinks and their homespun philosophies on life and death. Bar

Tom writes of a frequent enigmatic visitor to Liverpool... On Saturday, 8th August 1903, at approximately 9:45p.m., a young boy on William Henry Street witnessed a man assaulting a woman in one of the courts off Scotland Road. Suddenly, a frightening caped figure appeared to leap from the rooftop opposite the courts and glide down into the courtyard. Letting out a chilling laugh, the figure exhaled a stream of glowing blue fire towards the couple—but this "fire" never singed a single hair and ap

Tom writes of a Norris Green apparition... Liverpool has so many unknown ghosts. On this day in 2009, several people saw the ghost of a pallid woman with matted black hair, wearing a tattered green dress, drifting down Hazelslack Road towards Carr Lane in the Norris Green area. The apparition was seen at around 7:50pm and slowly faded away as it moved down Carr Lane. One lady phoned me at Radio Merseyside and said she believed children had found an old earthenware urn in a back garden containing

From Tom Slemen's Haunted Liverpool 10... Spriggans In April 1997, sixty-four-year-old Phil from Knotty Ash was watching television one evening, complaining, as usual, that the soap operas such as Eastenders and Coronation Street were becoming increasingly boring and untrue to life. His long-suffering wife Lyn had grown immune to her husband's endless and long winded complaints about the quality of television programmes, so much so that she didn't even bother to acknowledge his rants nowadays. From Tom's Haunted Liverpool 4: The Tanglwyst Sisters by Tom Slemen In the year 1500 a beautiful young raven-haired Welsh woman named Tanglwyst of St. David’s in Pembrokeshire was accused of bewitching the Bishop (John Morgan) of the cathedral of St. David because he was opposed to her ‘living in sin’ with widower Thomas Wyrriott, a member of the local landed gentry of Orielton. Tanglwyst was accused along with two other women of creating a wax effigy of the Bishop and causing his health to fail

They Came to Say Goodbye from Tom Slemen's Haunted Liverpool 11 Here is just one of the many hundreds of letters I receive each year from readers of my books and columns: Dear Tom, My name is George. I am 52 years old, with three children and one grandson. Twelve years ago, my grandson Ryan was born. My partner Maria and I were at the hospital for his birth. Over the two days following, we went back and forth between our home and the hospital, and eventually brought Ryan and his mother back to o

Tom Slemen is researching a little-known entity - possibly a witch - connected with Liverpool's Sefton Park - more soon: In addition to an unearthly pantheon of paranormal entities that have been reported at Sefton Park, I add a number of reports of a child-snatching "witch" who is said to have been at large at the park circa 1958-1970, and was encountered and tackled by many brave citizens and members of the local police force. | Haunted Liverpool

Tom writes: On this day in 1963, the ghost of a schoolgirl was reportedly seen both during the day and at night along Childwall Valley Road and around Hartsbourne Avenue. Some believed the apparition to be the spirit of Lesley Hobbs, who had been the victim of a nightmarishly brutal murder two months earlier, in December 1962, at her home on Childwall Valley Road. Witnesses said the ghost was carrying either a brown case or a satchel and appeared to be searching for someone. © Tom Slemen 2026 |

Tom writes about a group of troubled spirits down the town... Around this time last year, a (former) sceptical man I know heard about my reports of strange goings-on at the demolition site on Prescot Street, where the old Royal Teaching Hospital was being knocked down. The sceptic went there of a daytime and allegedly asked someone on the site whether there had been any unusual incidents connected to the hospital. He was told there had been reports of ghostly nurses, doctors, and patients — most

Tom writes of a weird incident which occurred on this date in the 1980s... Saturday, 28th April 1984 – A very strange incident occurred: two sisters, aged 13 and 9, were walking home through Wavertree from their grandmother’s house at 10:20 p.m. when they saw a bizarre, multi-eyed, slithering, vaguely humanoid entity staring at them from the window of a vacant flat on Grosvenor Road. The creature—whatever it was—terrified the sisters to the point that they became gibbering wrecks, and when they

Tom recalls... Sunday, 9 November 2008, around 8 p.m. A Huyton man named Ian was driving home when he took a wrong turn due to a road diversion, possibly connected to the “Big Dig” that was taking place at the time. He found himself travelling up Renshaw Street, which was practically deserted. Ian almost collided with what appeared to be a 19th-century coach and horses emerging from the archway of a disused building — formerly a garage. The coach turned left onto Leece Street, and when Ian follo

Tom writes of a grisly ghost... In the early 1980s a librarian at the Central Library in town saw a woman, covered in blood, appear out of nowhere one stormy afternoon and laugh at her. Others allegedly saw the ghost and one man said she might be the spirit of a librarian who was killed when a massive high explosive bomb landed on the roof of the Central Library in the May Blitz of 1941 - but although a lot of librarians were injured that night, none were killed. The ghost appeared two more time

Tom recalls two seasonal ghosts... Most ghosts are very sentimental; they often revisit the places where they lived, died, and loved, and I have noticed over the years that cases of hauntings tend to peak around Christmas. Perhaps the ghosts of long ago return to see how things have changed since their living, breathing days, and some may reminisce about the loves they once knew during Christmases past. This possibility may shed some light on why, in the 1960s and early 1970s, the ghosts of what

Tom writes of a weird apparition seen on a bus... I was recently speaking with an Arriva driver about a strange apparition that was said to haunt some of the buses on the Smithdown Road route in the early 2000s. The entity most commonly manifested as a completely black, silhouetted figure, which suggests it may belong to the sinister group of beings known as shadow people, reportedly sighted across the world in increasing numbers. However, the silhouette would sometimes transform into the figure

A woman contacted me the other day on here to say she does not believe in timeslips then stated, 'mind you, having said that, there was a weird incident last year when I visited the post office in Whitechapel with my niece and someone later told me that it was boarded up. Tom writes of a strange incident down the town... On the evening of Monday, 19 April 2010, at approximately 10:20 p.m., two young men turned the corner from School Lane (near the Bluecoat Chambers, behind Primark) and proceeded down Church Alley. There, they came face to face with a glowing reddish-orange globe, roughly 10 feet in diameter, which was slowly bouncing towards them. At first, the men assumed it might be some sort of inflatable advertising gimmick and smirked. However, they soon fel

Tom reflects on the strange creatures we have demonized over the centuries... The tree from which we humans branched bore many other creatures too: some were hunted to extinction, while others withdrew from the dominant species — you and I. What we perceived as alien, unfamiliar, or unlike ourselves, we often sought to destroy, and in time we fashioned reasons to justify that destruction. Adopting the mindset of those who came beneath the sign of the cross, we imagined the Faeries and the Little

Tom writes of a strange reconciliation... In December 1974—at least, that’s as close as I can place the date—during a fall of snow in Liverpool, a mysterious light was seen in the eastern sky for about fifteen minutes. Explanations offered afterwards included a Russian satellite burning up, and even the Zodiacal light: sunlight reflected from clouds of dust in space. Naturally, as it was December, there were inevitable comparisons between the light and the Star of Bethlehem. I mentioned the “UFO

Tom writes: Since around 2016, a curious-looking ghost has reportedly been seen in the John Lewis store at the Liverpool ONE shopping complex — an apparition reminiscent of Marty Hopkirk from the cult 1960s television series Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased): a tall man dressed entirely in white — suit, shirt, and even shoes. He has been glimpsed floating several inches above the ground in various departments of the store, and his appearance seems strikingly modern. Several mediums have remarked that

Tom writes of a mysterious lady in Childwall in his book... A long time ago, in the 1970s, a 21-year-old Liverpool University student named Damon was engaged to a pretty 19-year-old girl named Wendy. Everyone said they made a perfect couple, and Damon’s love for Wendy was unquestionable; he doted upon her—until something very strange happened when the couple moved to Childwall. Wendy noticed a change in her fiancé; he seemed distant. She eventually asked Damon if he was seeing someone, and he sa

Tom writes of a strange vehicle... A strange one; in early March 1969, a 21-year-old Liverpool man named Malcolm and his gang of three stole a truck from the car park of an industrial plant in the Warrington area and soon realised the vehicle was something very extraordinary. It appeared to be automatic but could accelerate from nought to almost 200 mph in seconds. The back of the lorry housed a central aisle running down the middle of the room, flanked by sleek, ergonomic chairs on either side.

Tom writes of today's date: A short but intriguing tale. On this date in 2014—which also happened to be a Tuesday—Lydia and Zoe, two young women in their early twenties and both students, were chatting in the evening at their flat. Tom writes: One of the strangest timeslips concerning Bold Street came from a young man who once worked as a barman in Prohibition, a bar and restaurant that was located in the old Lyceum building. The man said that around 2009, he went outside to have a smoke one rainy afternoon during his break, and all of Bold Street to his left looked as if it were in the 1950s or early 1960s. An eerie one from Tom: Exact date unknown, around January 1965, at approximately 11:30 p.m., a policeman on the beat saw a man defecating in an alleyway off Guernsey Road, Stoneycroft. The officer told him, “You can’t just squat in an alley, mate. That’s a breach of the peace.” The man then gave what sounded like a far‑fetched explanation. He claimed that the flat he lived in on Guernsey Road was haunted, and that a tentacle belonging to some strange creature had emerged from the toilet. He said

Tom writes of a very close encounter... Wednesday, 1 January 1986 – New Year’s Day, around 11:40 p.m. Neil and Tara, a couple from Wavertree in their late twenties, decided to go for a drive late that evening. Neil drove along Netherley Road and, about ten minutes into the journey, Tara remarked that a bright light appeared to be following them.
