The FDNY’s Marine Division deploys a rapid response summer boat program starting in May and running through the end of October. The companies are spread out throughout the city in areas that aren't immediately covered by the full-time boats. Marine Company 8 is located in Great Kills Harbor on Staten Island and covers the largest area for the summer boat program. Today marks the 87th birthday of Fireboat FIRE FIGHTER! 🎉💦 In frontline service for more than seven decades protecting New York Harbor, FIRE FIGHTER earned the distinction of being the most famous fireboat in the world. Pumping over 20,000 gallons a minute in 1938 made FIRE FIGHTER the most powerful fireboat of its time, as well as the largest of its kind, powered by a state-of-the-art diesel-electric system. In fact, this engineering marvel was even featured at the 1939 New York World’s Fair.

New York City's Third Avenue Bridge got stuck after hot temperatures caused the steel to expand and it couldn't close. Fireboats sprayed water on the bridge to cool it down.
