Tasan sata vuotta sitten tammi–helmikuussa 1925 suomensukuinen Leonhard Seppala oli luomassa legendaa. Alaskalaisessa Nomen kaupungissa riehui kuolettava kurkkumätä, ja vasta-aineseerumia tarvittiin kaukaa. Kuljetustavaksi keksittiin koiravaljakot, sillä muita tapoja päästä kaupunkiin ei ollut. Koiravaljakkokuninkaana tunnettu Seppala veti koirineen reitin pisimmän etapin 40–50 asteen pakkasissa. Suurin osa valjakkoajajista tuli kuitenkin alkuperäiskansojen, iñupiatien ja athabascojen, parista.
