Los Angeles has a long history of empowering reformed gang members to provide public safety. Sanyika Shakur was infamous on the streets of LA and used his influence as a former gang member to make our neighborhoods safer. In 1993 he became a best-selling author detailing his life, growth, and transformation, turning around the lives of thousands of young men. We lost another giant in black society, Assata Shakur AKA Joanne Chesimard. I had the privilege of reading her book while I was in college. At the University of Illinois we started a black book club where we had different historians come in like Stokley Carmichael, Frances Cress Welsing, Sister Soldier, etc. And one of the 1st books that we read was The Autobiography Of Assata Shakur who was accused of k*lling a state trooper, she escaped from Prison and moved to Cuba.
