This is locally called a ‘sifkop’- Tylecodon reticulatus ,a member of the crassula family which has the remarkable ability to mimic an ants nest. Its old flower stalks harden to form a barricade protecting the succulent leaves below, with the calyx of old flowers acting as “beads” running up and down the maze of old stalks.
